#WeDivest

By working with local groups and the 350.org Global Divestment Mobilization, we are:

Encouraging institutional divestment

Providing tools to assist with personal divestment

Providing links to learn how racial and environmental justice intersect to affect First Nations women

TAKE ACTION

Social Media

Suggestion for text

  • Share a video or boomerang of you cutting up your bank cards associated with your divestment.

  • Use the hashtags #WeDivest and #FossilFree and tag @wm_global

  • Include your bank’s Twitter @handle to make sure they hear you!

  • Need some inspiration? “Today I decided to make my voice heard and move toward a just, renewable economy. I ask my bank(s) @___________________ to go #fossilfree - #WeDivest!!!"

DIVEST

Divest your funds if possible.  Examine your personal finances and their commitment to sustainable and socially just investment. If not, contact your banking institution and express your concern; use social media and ensure you tag them to spread your message.

DivestInvest can help you research your current banks and consider alternatives for reinvestment.
Banktrack rates not only environmental responsibility, but social justice as well.
The European Federation of Ethical and Alternative Banks (FEBEA) can help if you're in Europe.
Market Forces: Your money as a force for good, is very useful.

EDUCATE

Learn about the environmental issues First Nations and Indigenous people are fighting in your community.

  • Step back and listen to their views on these issues which are often complex

  • Offer to help; let them lead the discussion on where you could be useful.

“Without the First Peoples it’s just another fight. Leaving the prayer and connection the land and water out.  It’s not right to organize in this way. We are the first environmentalists of these lands and the deep teachings of how to care for every little things.”  Paul Cheoketen Wagner, DeFund DAPL Seattle Action Coalition

Read about some of the young women in the fight against DAPL, including Bobby Jean Three Legs, Naelyn Pike, and Bethany Yellowtail.

Background

Three questions have helped to form the economic action platform for #WomensMarch and #WomensMarchGlobal.

  1. Do businesses support our communities, or do they drain our communities?

  2. Do they strive for gender equity or do they support the policies and leaders that perpetuate oppression?

  3. Do they align with sustainable environment or do they profit off destruction and steal the futures of our children?

We know that we cannot continue to invest our money in institutions that perpetuate oppression and destruction of Indigenous people, First Nations, and the environment.  Money talks.  And when your money walks, it shouts a message to the organizations that fail to uphold these values.  Women everywhere can work to tip the balance of power away from fossil fuels and support a just, renewable economy.

Women’s March Global is proud to be announce our latest Global Action-- Global Divestment.  We are working with 350.org and their Global Divestment Mobilisation to encourage institutions and individuals to consider divestment.   We also recognize the multitude of grassroots indigenous organizations around the world working to preserve sites and resources of cultural and environmental significance, including #defundDAPL.  Take control of your finances and ensure you #InvestInMotherEarth.

Further Actions

You can lead the local charge!  Has your city or university divested from funds that adopt environmentally and culturally insensitive practices?
Cities such as Bristol, Melbourne, and Seattle have responded to pressure of citizens and divested from fossil fuels.   Colombia, Oxford, and LaTrobe Universities are among hundreds worldwide that have listened to the voices of students and divested from fossil fuels.
